This antique wooden bit brace is a hand-powered tool traditionally used by carpenters and cabinetmakers for boring holes. The frame is constructed from a shaped piece of dark-toned hardwood, possibly beech or walnut, featuring a characteristic curved sweep. At the top is a rounded wooden pressure knob, and the central portion of the frame is fitted with a rotating grip for operation. This central grip bears an oval-shaped indentation that likely contained a manufacturer brand, though it is no longer legible. The tool is equipped with a metal chuck assembly at the base which currently holds a tapered drill bit. This specific design is a non-ratcheting model, which is indicative of mid-19th-century tool manufacturing. While the design is consistent with Sheffield-style braces from makers like Robert Marples or Ibbotson, the lack of a clear mark necessitates a generic identification.
