A mid-19th century American fraternal keepsake chest constructed of softwood featuring a hand-painted finish and high-relief applied carvings. The rectangular box is designed with a hinged lid and an inset base. The exterior is decorated with a black faux-graining tiger stripe pattern over a reddish-brown ground, which is particularly prominent on the molded base and side panels. The front panel features two large oval medallions containing the remains of polychrome floral or scenic paintings. Carved decorative elements include a high-relief hand holding a bouquet of flowers on each side panel and a repeating shell and foliate scroll border along the front edge of the lid. The top of the lid is further adorned with four embossed metal corner brackets. A heavily degraded rectangular plate or painted area below the keyhole bears a partially legible date, appearing to read 1855 or 1835. The interior is unfinished wood showing natural grain and standard plank construction.
