This commemorative relief plaque is hand-carved from dark anthracite coal, a material and style typical of folk art souvenirs produced in the Pennsylvania coal regions during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The oval-shaped plaque features a high-relief profile portrait of Admiral George Dewey, the celebrated hero of the Battle of Manila Bay. The figure is depicted in a naval officer uniform with a characteristic mustache. An integral raised scroll at the bottom of the bust contains the inscription ADMIRAL G. DEWEY.
