Carved Northwest Coast Canoe with Figure. A finely carved and painted model canoe measuring 19 x 5.5 inches, featuring a seated figure at center and a dramatically upturned prow. Carved from a single piece of wood, the canoe is decorated with black formline motifs along the bow, a hallmark of Northwest Coast artistry. The figure, simply rendered, suggests a paddler in motion, lending the piece a sense of narrative and life. Likely created in the late 19th century, model canoes such as this one served as both trade items and teaching tools, illustrating the distinctive vessel forms used for fishing, travel, and ceremony across the region. The warm patina, hand-painted details, and sculptural quality make this a compelling example for collectors of Native American and maritime art alike.
