This object is a whistle or game call handcrafted from a section of a tree branch. The exterior features original thick, deeply furrowed bark. The front end of the branch is cut at a sharp bevel and contains a hand-carved rectangular notch, or labium, necessary for sound production. The body consists of a hollow core within the branch. A hand-fitted plug made of a lighter-colored, peeled wood is inserted into the base to serve as the mouthpiece and windway. The plug is carved into a rectangular shape with a slight taper. No signatures, maker marks, or inscriptions are visible on the surface. Estimated length: 5 to 7 inches.
