This hand-forged wrought iron double crusie lamp, also known as a Phoebe lamp, is a primitive lighting device of a type common in early American and European households. The lamp features a double reservoir system consisting of two nested, heart-shaped pans. The smaller upper pan held oil and a wick, while the larger lower pan caught any excess fuel drippings. These pans are attached to a vertical wrought iron riser that includes a circular thumb-piece for manual adjustment. The riser terminates in a hand-turned pigtail swivel joined to a dual-purpose hanging fixture, which incorporates both a hook for suspension and a sharp spike for driving into wooden beams or masonry crevices. The lamp exhibits construction methods consistent with traditional blacksmithing. No maker marks, touchmarks, or signatures are visible on the surfaces.
