This hand-stitched mola textile originates from the Guna people of the San Blas Islands (Guna Yala), Panama. The item is constructed using multiple layers of cotton fabric through techniques of appliqué and reverse appliqué, supplemented with embroidery. The composition features a dense, symmetrical arrangement on a primary red ground. The central design consists of two large, stylized zoomorphic figures facing inward, surrounded by various smaller anthropomorphic and animal forms. The palette includes layers of black, yellow, green, and blue fabric, with fine v-shaped cutouts revealing the underlying colors. A border of multi-colored triangles and geometric shapes frames the central motif. The textile is mounted in a dark-toned wood frame behind glass. As is traditional for communal Guna folk art, no signatures or maker marks are present. Dimensions: Approximately 18 x 18 inches (frame size).
