A striking and rare Blackfoot (Niitsitapi) painted parfleche medicine case, crafted from rawhide and vividly decorated with traditional geometric forms in mineral pigments of red, yellow, green, and blue. The case features a classic envelope-form construction with long, supple hide fringe along both sides and a tie closure beneath the triangular flap. Circa 1900. The bold, symmetrical design reflects the strong graphic tradition of the Blackfoot and related Plains tribes, where parfleche containers served both utilitarian and ceremonial roles. Medicine cases of this form were used to house personal or sacred objects and were often imbued with protective and spiritual significance. The painted surface shows a confident hand and a pleasing, time-softened patina, with pigments that remain vibrant and well-preserved. The reverse retains a warm, natural hide surface showing honest use and age. The long, flowing fringe enhances the visual impact and movement of the piece, making it an exceptional display object as well as an important example of Plains material culture. A scarce and visually compelling example, sourced from a respected Texas collection and now offered from Ziebarth’s. Case: approximately 10 x 8 inches Fringe length: approximately 23 inches. Condition: Very good overall condition for a painted rawhide object of this age. Expected surface wear, minor paint loss, and areas of stiffness consistent with use and age. Fringe largely intact with typical minor losses and wear. Presents beautifully. Provenance: Texas collection.
