This indigenous Arctic model kayak is of Unangan Aleut origin, utilizing traditional skin on frame construction. The piece features a wooden skeletal structure covered in stretched animal hide, joined with prominent hand stitched sinew seams along the length of the deck and hull. A central cockpit houses a carved wooden figure wearing a hooded parka and a traditional Unangan peaked hunting hat. The surface of the hide shows an aged patina with natural variations in color. Faded dark markings, possibly historical collection or inventory numbers, are visible on the hull and the figure headgear.
