This antique heart-shaped padlock, often referred to as a Mickey Mouse style lock due to its form, features a heavy wrought iron body and shackle with a swinging brass keyhole cover or escutcheon. The brass cover is stamped with the Victorian Royal Cypher, depicting a crown over the initials VR for Victoria Regina. The manufacturer name A. THOMPSON is stamped along the bottom edge of the brass component. This type of hardware was typically produced for official government or British Crown property use, such as for the postal service, military facilities, or prisons during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901). The reverse of the lock includes a white rectangular inventory label with the handwritten number 173. The item retains an uncleaned, aged patina.
