This is an inert World War I period French 37mm artillery round, of the type used with the Hotchkiss revolving cannon and the Model 1916 infantry gun. The assembly consists of a brass casing, a steel projectile body with two copper driving bands, and a brass nose fuse. The base of the casing features several stamped identification marks. The top arch is stamped 37-85, denoting the 37mm caliber and the Model 1885 pattern. The left side is marked PDPs 53, the maker mark for Pinchart-Denys, Paris. The bottom arch is stamped 1.18, indicating a manufacture date of January 1918. Additional lot or inspection stamps including 185 L are visible on the right side. The side of the brass casing displays hand-scratched trench art featuring the word FRANCE and the year 1918. The steel projectile has a textured, ribbed surface and remains seated in the casing. The primer has been removed from the base of the shell, rendering the piece inert and safe for display.
