This is a mid-to-late 19th-century American salt-glazed stoneware cake crock, characterized by its wide, shallow, cylindrical form. The vessel features a heavy rim with two parallel incised lines below it and another single incised line encircling the midsection. The piece is fitted with two applied ear handles. The exterior is decorated with a large, hand-painted, stylized leaf or feather motif in cobalt blue slip. The handles are also accented with cobalt blue highlights. The interior is finished with a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze. While no maker's mark is present, the specific stylized leaf decoration is highly characteristic of stoneware produced in the Mid-Atlantic region, specifically attributed to the Remmey family of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The unglazed base shows signs of the kiln-firing process and age-appropriate wear.
