Inscribed on the scabbard "PRESENTED TO HENRY C MCILVAIN 65TH ILLS. VOL. INFT. FROM HIS FATHER. MERIT MEETS ITS OWN REWARD", making this a rare presentation piece from father to son.
The sword is marked W CLAUBERG SOLINGEN and on the reverse marked Schuyler, Hartley and Graham/New York. The blade measures approx 32 inches.
Records identify Captain Charles Henry McIlvain as a member of the 65th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
