This matched pair of early American lamps features free-blown flint glass fonts joined to pressed glass bases, a technique characteristic of the mid-19th century. The fonts are designed in an elongated conical or wine-glass shape and exhibit a subtle smoky or amethystine tint, which often occurs in early flint glass containing manganese. Each font is attached to its base via a triple-ringed wafer. The bases are made of clear pressed flint glass in a classic four-stepped square architectural design. This combination of blown and pressed components is strongly associated with New England glass houses of the period, including the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company and the New England Glass Company, circa 1835-1850. These vessels were originally intended for use with whale oil or burning fluid. There are no visible maker marks or signatures.
