The object is constructed with a flexible, finely woven substrate of bamboo or horsehair, which is coated in multiple layers of black and cinnabar-red lacquer. The exterior decoration utilizes the yun technique of hand-incised lines, featuring multiple horizontal registers of ocher-gold geometric sawtooth motifs against a dark ground. The top of the lid displays a central circular medallion with a symbolic or foliate design. The interior reveals a finely ribbed surface where the woven core material is visible beneath the lacquer. This type of vessel was traditionally used within the Karen hill tribes of the Myanmar and Thailand border regions for the storage of betel chewing ingredients.
