A cylindrical metal tobacco tin featuring a decorative exterior of West African leather and woven grass. The body of the canister is covered in dark reddish-brown leather with raised horizontal ribbing at the top and bottom. The central section is decorated with a wide band of woven grass or straw in a diagonal geometric pattern of natural and dark brown tones. The removable lid is similarly leather-wrapped and features a decorative cross-stitch pattern in woven strips. The interior of the lid is embossed with a circular mark containing the text HOTHAMS at the top and MOROCCO at the bottom, surrounding a central crest. This style of leatherwork was produced in West Africa, particularly by Hausa craftsmen, for the colonial export market. The core of the object is a tin-plated steel vessel.
