This ceremonial sun rattle is hand-carved from wood with polychrome painted decoration. The central spherical body is constructed in two parts and features a relief-carved stylized face with bold formline eyebrows, large eyes, and a horizontal mouth. Five flat, radiating rays are attached to the perimeter of the sphere, each decorated with ovoid and U-form motifs in a traditional palette of red and black pigment over a natural wood ground. The rattle is mounted on a straight cylindrical wooden handle. The reverse of the sphere and rays is unfinished, showing natural wood grain and carving marks.
