A 19th-century salt-glazed stoneware crock of cylindrical form featuring a tapered base and a prominent collared rim. The vessel bears an impressed mark on the upper shoulder reading HARRISONBURG, identifying its origin from the Shenandoah Valley pottery center in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The body is decorated on opposite sides with large, hand-brushed manganese or iron-oxide swash or comma motifs, a characteristic decorative style found in regional Virginia stoneware. The exterior surface exhibits typical salt-glaze pitting and iron spotting throughout.
