A small, cylindrical lidded basket of Makah or Nuu-chah-nulth origin, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. This piece is crafted using fine twining techniques with dyed grass fibers over a cedar bark structure. The decorative scheme features horizontal bands of violet, emerald green, and ochre yellow fibers against a natural grass ground. A stylized geometric bird motif is woven into the center of the side wall in violet dyed fiber. The lid exhibits a central concentric sunburst pattern. The base of the basket is constructed from wide, plaited strips of cedar bark, a structural characteristic of Indigenous basketry from the Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island regions. Diameter: 3 inches Height: 2.5 inches.
