This pair of seated dog figurines is modeled in the style of Staffordshire spaniels and is attributed to the Bell pottery of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. The figurines are hollow-cast from a coarse, reddish-brown earthenware or redware body. Each piece is finished in a rich, high-gloss chocolate-brown lead glaze with vibrant yellow or ochre sponged mottled spots on the ears, face, and body. This specific spongeware technique and primitive folk art modeling are characteristic of 19th-century Mid-Atlantic redware production. The interiors of the figures are hollow, revealing the unglazed red clay body at the base. No maker marks or signatures are visible.
