This Plains Indian umbilical cord fetish is fashioned in the form of a turtle. The object is constructed from tanned leather, with the top carapace featuring dense lane-stitch beadwork. The decorative scheme consists of alternating vertical stripes in red and yellow glass seed beads, embellished with two yellow equal-armed crosses. The head is finished in yellow beadwork with two dark blue beads representing the eyes. Four leather limbs extend from the body, each decorated with a single large, multi-colored banded glass bead secured by leather thongs ending in short fringe tips. The reverse side consists of undyed leather with a visible patina. A modern metal safety pin is attached to the leather at the neck area on the underside.
