A Native American beaded zoomorphic fetish, traditionally used as a protective container for a child's umbilical cord. The ornament is constructed from sueded leather in a three dimensional form representing a winged insect, likely a dragonfly or bumblebee. The body is decorated with transverse bands of yellow and black glass seed beads. The wings are worked in a white bead ground featuring stylized four pointed star or cross motifs in red, yellow, blue, and black. The head is detailed with circular blue and red beaded eyes. Multiple leather thongs are attached to the underside, each terminating in a dark metal cone tinkler. The reverse shows the natural sueded leather surface with a vintage metal safety pin attached for fastening. This type of object is characteristic of the Plains region, specifically the Lakota Sioux and related cultures.
