This hand-modeled terracotta vessel is crafted in the form of a turtle, a significant zoomorphic motif in the Tairona culture of ancient Colombia. The shallow, circular basin serves as the carapace or shell, featuring an interior base decorated with incised lines that form a grid of hexagonal patterns representing scutes. The rim is finished with a series of diagonal, impressed notches. Four small flippers project from the body, each detailed with short incisions to indicate toes. A long, tapering neck extends from one side, ending in a simplified head with recessed eyes and nostrils. The ceramic body exhibits a natural reddish-orange to buff color with extensive dark grey and black fire-clouding on both the interior and exterior surfaces from the original firing process. The surface has a matte finish with visible mineral encrustation and soil deposits consistent with archaeological find conditions.
