A Sioux Native American umbilical cord fetish crafted in the form of a lizard. The object is constructed from hide with the upper surface entirely covered in lane-stitched (lazy-stitch) beadwork. The decoration features opaque seed beads on a white ground, displaying stylized geometric motifs in shades of yellow, orange, green, and blue. Two of the legs terminate in large red glass beads and tapered metal cone tinklers suspended from hide thongs. The tail is worked in alternating bands of orange, green, and dark seed beads. The reverse side consists of exposed hide showing the natural material texture. A contemporary safety pin has been threaded through the upper portion of the hide for display. This type of amulet was traditionally used by Plains tribes to house and protect a child's umbilical cord.
