The instrument features a heavy brass case with a wide, flared bezel and a dark-finished rear mounting flange with three integrated mounting holes. The dial face consists of a silvered metal surface calibrated from 0 to 400 with numerical markers at every 50-unit interval. The blackened steel indicator needle is designed with a decorative scroll tail and a crescent-shaped tip. The dial is inscribed with The Chicago Ship Building Company Chicago, Ill. arranged in a semicircle, along with Engine No. 15. and Steam. The maker mark appears within a shield-shaped logo reading Star Brass Mfg. Co. Non-Corrosive Boston. The dial also specifies 8 1/2 inch and lists patent dates for July 30, 1889, January 2, 1894, and July 4, 1899. The internal components are protected by a clear glass cover.
