This antique kitchen implement is a hand-carved wooden butter roller, a tool traditionally used to press decorative designs into large rolls or blocks of butter. The tool is constructed from a solid hardwood, such as maple or fruitwood, and features a lathe-turned handle decorated with sets of incised rings. A metal screw-eye hook is fixed to the pommel end for hanging. The business end of the tool consists of a carved wooden fork that houses a cylindrical roller. This roller is deeply hand-carved with a repeating concentric circle or bullseye motif, a classic design in American folk art. The roller is secured and rotates on a simple wooden pin axle. No maker marks, signatures, or stamps are visible on the item.
