This Native American ethnographic object is a beaded turtle fetish or umbilical cord amulet, a form traditionally associated with Plains Indian cultures such as the Lakota. The piece is constructed from soft-tanned leather and stuffed to create a three-dimensional form. The upper carapace is decorated with glass seed beads applied in a lane-stitch technique, featuring a series of orange striped patterns against a white ground. The head is finished with dark blue seed bead eyes, and the four limbs are accented with beaded wraps in orange, yellow, and blue-green bands. The underside consists of undressed leather with a metal safety pin attached at the tail end. The edges are finished with a dark brown beaded border.
