A Sioux Native American beaded turtle umbilical cord fetish featuring a tanned hide body with a fully beaded upper surface. The beadwork is executed with glass seed beads in a palette of yellow, blue, and orange. The central decorative field consists of a yellow ground accented by two blue crosses, flanked by alternating orange and blue stripes that extend to the limbs. The head and tail are also fully beaded in coordinating orange and blue patterns. Each of the four limbs is tipped with a small white shell or bone fragment secured to the hide. The reverse side is unadorned tanned hide with a visible pebbled texture and includes an attached metal safety pin for suspension. Traditionally, these amulets were used by Plains tribes to store and protect a child's umbilical cord, with the turtle symbol representing longevity and protection for the infant.
