This North American Plains Indian beaded hide effigy is fashioned in the form of a turtle, a traditional design for umbilical cord amulets or fetishes. The item is constructed from tanned buckskin, with the upper surface densely decorated in lane stitch beadwork. The glass seed beads are arranged in a palette of white, light blue, red, and yellow. The design program includes geometric bands and three cruciform motifs commonly associated with stars or dragonflies. The four legs are composed of painted wooden beads terminating in hide tassels. A metal safety pin is affixed to the underside near the head. The underside consists of undecorated tanned hide.
