Sioux Native American beaded hide turtle amulet. The object is constructed from tanned hide, with the dorsal surface densely decorated in geometric beadwork using glass seed beads in vibrant shades of orange, yellow, medium blue, light green, and red. The beadwork is executed in a multi-directional lane stitch or contoured applique technique, creating a patterned shell and striped limbs. Two of the limbs feature leather thong attachments terminating in cylindrical wooden or horn beads. The underside is plain, undyed hide. A metal safety pin is attached to the underside near the head. Traditionally, these objects served as umbilical cord fetishes intended to protect a child and ensure long life.
