United States Model 1917 steel combat helmet, also referred to as the Doughboy helmet. The piece features a shallow-bowl design with a wide, flared brim and a separate steel rim edge. The exterior is finished in olive drab paint with a heavy, textured anti-reflective coating of sand or sawdust. The interior retains its original olive drab paint. The liner system is largely missing, though the central burlap and felt crown pad remains secured to the top of the shell. Rectangular wire chin strap bales are riveted to the brim and retain portions of an original two-piece leather chin strap with a small metal sliding buckle. No alphanumeric heat stamps or manufacturer markings are visible on the shell.
