An American salt-glazed stoneware storage jar with a two gallon capacity. The jar features a cylindrical body with a tapered shoulder rising to a collared rim accented by a single incised line. The exterior is finished with a salt glaze while the interior features a dark brown Albany slip glaze. The front of the jar displays stenciled cobalt blue advertising that reads W. E. CHAFFEY and CO. / AGENTS. / 264 / LIBERTY ST. / PITTS. The street number is flanked by three-leaf floral sprig motifs. A large, hand-brushed cobalt blue capacity mark 2 is centered near the base, flanked by two horizontal cobalt swipes on either side. A band of cobalt blue wash is applied to the neck area just below the rim. The stenciling style, floral motifs, and use of horizontal swipes are highly characteristic of the late 19th-century stoneware production from the Greensboro and New Brighton regions of Western Pennsylvania, specifically resembling the work of James Hamilton or Hamilton and Jones.
